João dos Santos Martins was born in Santarém, Portugal, in 1989. He is graduated in Dance by the Lisbon Poly-technical Higher School of Dance (2007/10), and he has also attended Codarts - Rotterdam Dance Academy (2010), PARTS, the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios (2010/11) directed by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, and the MA CuP – Justus-Liebig-Universitat Giessen (2012) directed by the Professor Bojana Kunst.
He works as an interpreter and choreographer since 2008. He has collaborated in projects by Xavier le Roy (Untitled 2012 and Retrospective par Xavier le Roy, 2012), Rui Horta (Talk-Show, 2009-2012), André e. Teodósio (Egossistema, 2011), Cão Solteiro (A Portugueza, 2009), Felix Ruckert (Ring, 2009), Ana Borralho e João Galante (I Put a Spell on You, 2008), among others, and he has figured in films by Raoul Ruiz (Os Mistérios de Lisboa), João Botelho (A Corte do Norte) and João Pedro Vale (Hero, Captain, Stranger).
In 2011 he was commissioned by the Serralves Foundation, Porto, to adapt the solo Conquest, choreographed by Deborah Hay. In that same year he was submitted in the master program on Choreographic Studies – ex.e.r.ce - directed by Mathilde Monnier in partnership with the Université Paul Valèry III in Montpellier. In that context he has participated in the reconstruction of the piece Continous Project - Altered Daily (1970) by Yvonne Rainer, in colaboration with Xavier le Roy and Christophe Wavelet, presented in Festival d'Autoumne 2012, Paris.
João is a recipient of scholarships by ESD-IPL 2008/2009, danceWeb 2010, Centro Nacional de Cultura (2010), ENPARTS (2010/2011) and Calouste Gulbenkian Fundation (2011-2013).
He currently prepares a new collaboration with Min Kyoung Lee, entitled ULTIMATE Sacre, to premiere in Portugal in September 2013
