David Hernandez US

Active as a multi faceted performing artist based in Brussels since 1993. In a career spanning more than 30 years, he has enjoyed collaborating as a choreographer, dancer, singer, performer, visual artist, teacher and coach on projects spanning baroque opera to urban dance video. He has played a vital role in shaping creations by iconic names in the European dance world like Meg Stuart / Damaged Goods and Rosas / Anne Teresa de Keersmaker as well as launched landmark dance initiatives such as the Crash Landing and Performance Hotel events, the PEP performance program, and multimedia installations with longtime creative partners LaborGras (Berlin), Collectif du Lion (BE) amongst many others.

David’s unique choreographic voice and detailed dance language has brought critically acclaimed work to stages across Europe for over two decades. Since 2015, he has deepened his choreographic research through a partnership with Cacao Bleu vzw under the banner dh+ / David Hernandez and Collaborators. Within this framework, he created productions For Movement’s Sake, Hullabaloo and Sketches on Scarlatti, Vox. These works were supported domestically by STUK (Leuven), Monty (Antwerp), Beursschouwburg (Brussels), and C-mine (Genk) and internationally by the Ballets de Lorraine, Scènes Vosges (Épinal), Into The Fields Festival (Bonn), National Center for Choreography Tours / Direction Thomas Lebrun, Mediterranean Dance Center San Vincenti, C-Takt Dommelhof and Cocoon Dance,… amongst many others.

In addition to creating choreographic work with a core group of committed dancers, he continues to influence new generations through his pedagogical activities as a faculty teacher at P.A.R.T.S and on commission for schools, companies and festivals such as Into The Fields (Bonn), DOCH (Stockholm), Skanes Dansteater, Susanne Linke Company (Trier) , Folkwang Tanzstudio (Essen) and Zagreb Dance Company, . Recent pieces such as Lonely Hunter, Other, …and my beloved, The Devil’s Garden and Passage won over audiences and critics to become important repertory pieces for the companies who commissioned them. Continued collaborations with Moya Michael, Colored Swans/ El Dorado, Michel Debrulle and Collectif du Lion (as a musician and choreographer), Labor Gras et al have been an important part of his artistic trajectory. Most recently, David was invited to make a co-creation with Moya Michael for Xin Jing Dance Theater in Shanghai and spent the past year in a guest professorship at FOLKWANG Universität der Künste in Essen Germany. Recently he directed and choreographed the new production Repercussion ID, with Collectif du Lion and Michel Debrulle. Most recently he co- choreographed the piece Random Goodbyes with Moya Michael for Xing Ching Dance Theater ( Shanghai/ Paris ) and created and performed in the new show Careening Weave in collaboration with LaborGras ( Berlin )

Having begun his artistic career as a singer and student in Opera, Jazz and Studio Music at the University of Miami in his home state of Florida, USA, David continues today to nurture his musicianship through the projects with Rêve d’Elephant with Michel Debrulle and formerly with the early music ensemble Graindelavoix as well as having created soundscapes for other artists work like Anouk VanDijk, LaborGras et al. With over 30 years of stage and arts experience under his belt, David continues to push the limits of his craft through his passion for multimedia, storytelling and composing richly poetic worlds on stage and off.
